Our Heritage

The Bedford North Lawrence Scholarship Foundation was organized July 12, 1967, for the benefit of students and educational programs of the North Lawrence Community Schools as a not-for-profit corporation pursuant to provisions of the Acts of the General Assembly, May 31, 1921, and as amended.

Dr. Dan A. Schafer (1916-2000), Superintendent of Bedford and North Lawrence Community Schools (1956-81) was a major force in the organization of the Foundation and worked diligently on its behalf from the time of its incorporation until his death.

Incorporators of the Foundation were:
  • Clarence J. Donovan, Attorney at Law
  • George Hawkins
  • John R. Hodges
  • Robert W. Medlock, DVM
  • LaVere Magruder

The Foundation and its business affairs are governed by a Board of Directors which is vested with and may exercise all the powers of the Foundation. The first Board of Directors was composed of the above five men in addition to Perry E. Mullis, Congressman Eugene B. Crowe, Dr. Dan A. Schafer, and Burnettia Denny.

The Foundation is supported by gifts of money and property. Assets are invested to maintain the value of the original gift. Scholarships are provided by direct gifts, income from gifts and/or a combination of these, according to the wishes of the donor. 100% of all scholarship donations and income have always gone directly to scholarships and do not support the operating functions of the foundation.
